Common Workplace Accidents and How to Prevent Them

One never wants to deal with a workplace accident or injury. Especially, while growing their business.

Physical harm is not the only kind of accident that can happen in the workplace. Consequently, undue stress and hardship for employees and employers can also occur.

First, start with a general awareness and understanding of safety risks to prevent accidents. Then, pair that knowledge with an action plan that will reduce the number of potential risks for injury in the workplace.

Some Workplace Accident Statistics

The latest data on workplace accidents show that there were 544,800 workplace injuries and 32,700 workplace illnesses in 2019.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that out of those cases:

  • 11% involved overexertion in lifting or lowering.
  • 64% of bone fractures were from accidents in the service industries.
  • 62% of slips, trips, and falls were on the same level.
  • 20% of slips, trips, and falls were from a worker falling between two or more levels.
  • 15% of all nonfatal workplace injuries were from workers being struck by equipment or objects while on the job.
  • 35% of cases across all industries resulted from sprains, strains, and tears.

Also, the BLS reported that across all industries, more than 25% of all injuries were caused by slips, trips, and falls.

A Few Good Ways to Prevent Workplace Accidents

A strategic safety plan can help to avoid workplace accidents. Moreover, owners and employees both can help to create a culture of safety and prevention with proactive measures.

Consider the following tips to help strengthen your safety efforts:

  1. Promote safety awareness and education with regular safety meetings and employee safety training materials.
  1. Ensure proper lighting which helps to create a well-lit and visible jobsite. Also, it makes it easier for anyone to identify potential risks and avoid them.
  1. Show safety hazards with clear and informational signage that directly identifies hazardous areas and potential risks. Such as, obstacles, spills, toxic materials, or other hazards.
  1. Clean up spills as soon as they happen. Furthermore, remember to always have cleaning equipment readily accessible in your workplace.
  1. Perform routine safety checks to prevent hazards, such as spills or other obstacles.
  1. Ensure proper ventilation to keep toxic chemicals or other foreign particles from being inhaled.
  1. Enforce a dress code that promotes accident prevention. For example, hard hats or slip-resistant shoes.

Finally, now that you understand some of the most common causes of workplace accidents and how to prevent them, you can help to enforce your own safety program at work.

All the tips above are just a rough draft for the basis of your program. Also, you can tailor the needs of accident prevention to the unique challenges in your own workplace.
